We were young men driven by passion and determination.
To reach a goal that had inspired our friendship,
And motivated our suffering throughout our time on Parris Island.
We had seen and done the things
We imagined in our past.
Pursuing a path that didn’t seem to
Attract many of our peers.
Here we are, years apart - looking on at the young DIs
And the even younger recruits.
That Gunny is my age, bro.
Don’t you ever wonder what it would have been like
Had we stayed in?
What is it called when you feel chewed up
And spit out,
But still proud?
