Note: As you all know, we try to encourage, amplify, and champion the fiction, poetry or creative non-fiction of current and former military, law enforcement, fire/EMS, intelligence service and DoD contractor personnel, as well as their immediate family members. thebloodandthebones is none of these. I hoped that she was because her poetry blew me away, speaking so accurately about emotional states painfully familiar to our veterans and their family members. While her attachments to veterans have never been formalized or made official, we weren’t going to let a piece of paper stop us from sharing her work with you all here. When you read it, I think you’ll understand why.

the sun rises
the moon sleeps
the clock hums
and I think of you
only all of the time
sunbeams and moonbeams
and all the shades
of the in between
i don’t speak of you though
your name tattooed
on my tongue
i don’t bleed for
you anymore
either
but just like the desire
that aches
and the minutes
that crawl
and the lies
that burn
you are there
always
