The sun rises over headstones,
oozing amber glow across their shapes.
Take this day,
or die a thousand times.
Dense fog swells in the valley,
replacing a moment of clarity
held loosely in mind.
The view is narrowing.
“Slow down,” the old man said,
his voice beating like a war drum—
or a heart—
in the bastion of my mind.
“Slow down.
Slow down.
Slow down.”
