Months of green-hour mornings
flatten a copper-smelling sea,
heating your neck even before the daylight.
The rail is always sticky with shards of salt,
turning your fingers gray.
Out there we are engines
Redrawing the edge of water
with the wide and heavy swing
of handles, the fulcrum of a hollow knife.
Did you break your word to
the nations nested
in every fleet of shoals?
Did you plant your feet on the rock
three miles underwater?
