Shameless Plug Sunday Press Release
Industry Reading of Deborah Yarchun's the calm before Stars Krysta Rodriguez and Michael Gaston Held January 23
(Note: When it comes to news and events at VetRep, we like to give you all the first notice. So we weighed that heavier than crafting a really exciting unique post. There’s so much we’d love to say more about the calm before and how excited we are for our first industry read of it. But it’s Sunday morning for us too, people. So here’s your first look at our official press release.)
Veterans Repertory Theater (Christopher Paul Meyer, Artistic Director) announced an industry reading of the new play the calm before by Deborah Yarchun, in advance of a future production. The reading takes place January 23 in Manhattan. Directed by Jessica Blank, the reading will star Krysta Rodriguez (The Collaboration, Into the Woods) and Michael Gaston (Lucky Guy). Yarchun is a two-time Jerome Fellow through the Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis.
the calm before is a taut two-person play set in and leading up to a massive hurricane in Texas. Ellen drives to retrieve her father Mitch from riding out the storm. Tensions rise throughout the night as violent winds, tough love, and uncomfortable truths escalate.
Yarchun said, “As Hurricane Harvey approached Texas, I was in Austin and struck by the eerie calm that precedes a storm. the calm before brings together several areas that fascinate me: why people refuse to evacuate during natural disasters, families with landmines of political differences (particularly in these divisive times), and what it means when a parent-child dynamic flips and a parent refuses to relinquish control. At its heart, the play explores a fraught father-daughter relationship full of love and complexities."
Veterans Repertory Theater is producing.
