I never understood why men
called women foxes
until I met her.
I’ve played cat and mouse
plenty of times before,
but I think this time I was the mouse,
and the pussy chased me.
But then again-
I’m still a Devil Dog
and I’ve been known to bark up
trees that I shouldn’t.
She must’ve never been taught
not to play with her food,
because she devoured me
every time our eyes met.
I never would’ve thought
she was a shield maiden,
but once she dropped her guard,
I saw Valkyries in her eyes,
I saw thunder,
I saw passion,
I saw intensity.
I never read any of my poetry
romantically,
but she drew it out of me,
like some Southern Jezebel Witch.
I joked that I couldn’t spell,
as she cast spells.
I hope I never see her again
for her own sake.
I hope she finds all she desires
in the path she’s walking.
Because if she comes back to New Orleans
I might never let her leave again.
