I'm not drinking a Jaeger for you
every fucking year.
Truth be told Matt,
these days I barely even drink beer.
When I consume alcohol alone
missing everyone sometimes
brings me to tears.
It brings on those kind of thoughts
we all fear.
Sad news no one wants to
but bitterly expects to hear-
22 a day
8,030 a year.
No, Matt, I'm not gonna
drown sorrows
in some liquor I don't even like.
Sinking in my misery
Overflowing from the dike
Memories of the infantry
Machine guns on the hike.
I'll remember and honor you
in better ways-
By the actions I do
and the words I say.
You stood by my side
In my darkest days.
You believed in me
at my lowest point
When I had gone astray.
But now you're a weathered
black bracelet
I look at every day.
These days, though, you inspire me.
Who you were, unapologetically-
Matthew Gee:
a brother to every Marine
in the company,
so much more than just infantry.
It's a shame you're not around to see
the men all your boots will grow up to be.
We've got the watch,
it's all secure.
We carry on your legacy.
Rest in Power
