It was a hot summers day
On a Mediterranean beach
Lot more pebbles than sand
(Which was a welcome relief)
Sun beating down relentlessly
With a cool breeze to even out the afternoon
As I began to make an empty spot my own
I flung out my towel
Pulled out my book
And looked with sadness at what I was so excited for
Earlier that morning with a kind and tender smile a farmer sold me fresh fruits
I could only imagine the time and labor to produce such sweet gifts
Peaches and strawberries sharing a bag with fresh cut meats
My light lunch to be shared with sips of gin
But in my carelessness
I allowed such delicate berries to be crushed with everything in my backpack
Their deformed appearance in what looked like a crime scene made me seek the bin
Yet as I sat and soaked in the rays,
I craved some of the not so beaten ones
They were as splendid as I had hoped
In that moment as I enjoyed each sweet bite,
I felt disgust in myself
Of my own doing I crushed such fragile gems
With such a carelessness
And at the sight of my own doing
I was ready to toss them away like trash
