Folks,
Starting this Saturday, the Parlor is back with our riskiest show yet: Joshua Harmon’s 2018 Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle award-winning Admissions.
Now, why would we knowingly poke the bear and feature a play that is a more think-y, feel-y, and more packed with social commentary than our usual light-hearted Saturday night comedies?
Well, for one thing, it’s an awesome play.
So it isn’t a creative risk. But, in a day and age when you can’t open the door without offending someone, this play is, well, riskier.
Of course, theater without risk becomes something less than theater, so we really don’t care. But also, we have the insider knowledge of what is coming next season - when we no longer will feature non-veteran-authored plays. When you can expect a wide range of subjects and genres. And we needed a good trial balloon to test our audience’s tolerances for plays that aren’t comedies - and that push some sacred cows around.
So here ya go.
Admissions is not a traditional comedy. It’s a provocative yet even-handed look at the college admissions process and the hypocrisies, gaffes, primal screams, and noble intentions behind race-based admissions. Issues of race, class, and privilege are confronted head-on with Joshua Harmon’s straightforward, unsparing, blunt dialogue. It’s a night of satire, drama and social commentary that will leave you questioning, laughing, and shaking your head.
Drinks, dessert, a hilarious live performance, professional actors, an intimate unforgettable space, pay-what-you-can tickets…it simply does not get better than this.
As always, you’re welcome to show up and hope for a cancellation. But if you really want to see the show, why not book now and save yourself the uncertainty?
