Oh how beautiful are the movies and social media posts
“Daddy’s home”
“Glad to have my Marine home”
*Signs expressing how missed they were*
Don’t worry babe,
Your Instagram will have all the happy faces
You’ll look like all the other spouses
The image they all strive to be
As pure and genuine as it is,
They never show the thoughts of the man returning
“Am I ready to be thrust into the life I’ve been removed from?”
I catch myself seeing my reflections in this home that feels brand new
Even if it’s been home between work travels
“Who in the fuck am I looking at?”
Knowing I have to rediscover myself in this capacity
“When can I leave again and why is it not now?”
Knowing I don’t truly belong without my boys within arms reach
I find a moment of solitude
In desperate silent cries I wonder
Why do I now carry the burdens of work from before
As well as the crushing anxiety of inserting myself into a life that picked up while my life paused
Yet these feelings dig a crater into my being
This isn’t what you signed up for
And this isn’t who I thought I would’ve become
All I can do I run from my reflection
Not knowing who the fuck is in that reflection
Wondering if things could ever be the same again
