You took away Halloween, then Thanksgiving.
My first Christmas with you I was on line-
DI giving Christmas cards
with an exercise and rep count to recruits
like a belligerent Santa.
I spent New Years in a crucible,
and Valentine’s Day without my lovers’ warmth
in the freezing cold of the field.
I got drunk on the beach on July 4th
and wound up in a shouting match with
my little brother
about killing people.
Pride cometh before the fall,
I deployed to Syria late Summer through Fall,
when I came home I wasn’t the same at all.
She came to spend Christmas in my barracks room
when you wouldn’t let me go home,
but by
the 4th of July
I made her cry-
When I told her I was leaving her for you
for good, no more playing both loves.
Rarely saw my family,
just the brothers that you gave me.
72s and 96s for holidays
that I had to ask you for permission to go home for
until home wasn’t home anymore,
and I hated the holidays.
