Here is a challenge
to measure human against humane
to find the difference
between the heart and the brain
we are meant to coexist
we were meant to be at peace
but our borders are drawn in red
and the wars will never cease
our acts of kindness are far too random
our love seems to inspire ire
our faith is a cudgel to smash hope
our allies light the great fire
where is the ember of trust
that is inherent to the human soul?
where are the missing pieces
that can help to make us whole?
the dread I feel in the dark of night
is that maybe this is who were really are
maybe we don't have peace within us
maybe it's a destination too far
these are the thoughts of tired hours
these are the nightmares of a tired mind
but there is always a flower among the weeds
our true selves are not impossible to find
