Heart racing
Salt crusting in the corners where tears made their place in a cold dark room
Eyes opening at the speed of light
The faster they open the faster I can escape
Another night another set of nightmares
Never the same
Always something creatively different
Denying me any good sleep
But tonight I won’t complain much
If I’m being honest
As I reach over this time
It’s not a pillow
But rather a gentle soul
Pulling her in
No words needed
Soft rhythm of breathing in
A moment
Or two
And a breath out
A heartbeat I feel
That with short time
Leads mine from a frantic rush
into its same steady state
Effortlessly
Temporary as it may be
I rather have
even for just a small bit
Than continue to go without
Tomorrows problems belong with tomorrow
Laying there with a bit of fear
Because once I fall asleep again
(Which I quickly will)
The expiration of this safety net will expedite
I’d like to have my cake and eat it to
Being as selfish as I could be
But it just can’t be
The sun is rising now
Im wide awake

What’s happening at VetRep…
Join us for an intimate evening of theater in the heart of Cornwall at our cozy Parlor on Quaker Ave. The final Parlor performance of the year will feature seven, 10-minute plays authored by veterans, including plays that have won grants through VetRep’s bi-annual Playwriting competition. Settle in with a winter mocktail and dessert while we explore drama, comedy, and all the feelings in between through each short play.
