I let myself cry tears
On the plane to Italy
Tried to take selfies
In burnt orange sunsets
Drank water from stone fountains
Smelled the familiar smell of piss
In the abandoned mountain sanctuary
Of a long dead monk
I needed Elizabeth Gilbert
And the smooth green marble of the Duomo
When I saw Michaelangelo’s David
I knew poetry was the language of angels
Attempting to imitate God
