A cactus won’t bloom indoors
On your windowsill
In the thrifted pot you chose.
It won’t lose its spikes
If you love it enough.
You can only coax a bloom
If you mimic the desert.
In the unfiltered sun
In the dry earth
She grows on and on and on
Where the sharpness has its purpose,
the scars crust over brown and leather hard
And the bright flowers unfurl
As if to say
Look what I have done with all this harshness
Look what I have made
how I survived
Look at the beautiful life I have bought with this pain
