The future will look just like this.
Banana trees, their upended boat-leaves
a skewed line of whorls from the mountainside.
Businessmen white-knuckling the highway,
listening to Billie, afraid of nuclear war.
A roadside farmer in a white sun hat,
scraping away at the Earth’s crust that couches
his delicate rice plants, all bejeweled with snails.
On the patio above the valley,
my buddy’s straw digging his glass of ice
for the last loud drops
that make no difference.
Punching and punching
his face in the sludge
till the shallow
picture
shatters.
