Her name is Barbell, not to be confused with Barbara, “Babe”, or Becky. She holds my weight, no matter how much or how little of it I bring. She is Semper Fidelis. She has always held my weight, faithfully. She never bends or breaks. She is Semper Verax. She is always truthful. She has never lied to me. It is her job to hold it, and mine to lift it. Pools of water and glass mirrors are not the only way to see your reflection. Barbells will show you yourself- the density and strength and stamina of the muscle and bone she helps you build. When I was a younger man Barbell and I would go all day and all night- We were hot, and by God, we were heavy. When I load her up now and can’t get it up, we both know it’s not her- it’s me. So Barbell, “babe,” I’m ready to spend some more time on us- strengthening our relationship.
