but deeper than that
down into depths where it beats at the chest from the inside
so that we know we are alive
or that maybe we can’t escape
it gives meaning to meaning
and to what could never have been impeded or honed
what pain and what tragedy
and chapters rewritten thought to be closed
what crescendo and smooth biding silence
what spilled blood and what broken bone
the phrase we almost made it will always hold
