A warm March day Walking on a field where the battle ended long ago now a place of peace people going about life an older couple cuddles on a blanket students go by on bikes While we discuss wars that rage now wars perhaps yet to come we share a bond with the ghosts who know more than most what took place here to give this generation the peace that is assumed We wish we could take peace for granted but we know better than that we being students of war and history who know that the veneer of civilization can disappear with an assassination a secession a territorial possession an ethnic regression borders reclaimed a soccer game an idea bought or sold the ever present God, Glory, and Gold how many fell here who wouldn’t grow old The thoughts in my mind that never cease while those who wander around us only know peace
