What if we were made for each other
but what if we aren’t
Do you even believe you can be made for a person
Do you believe you can be better than you were
Is it right this time
for once
You understand, at least a little
why they say not to sleep around
and worry in ways a man has never had to worry
Truthfully, in ways you had never worried
about every image of your body
about every hand that ever touched it
about the path you picked
when you weren’t such a woman
just a dying animal
He could be the right one
at the right time
and wouldn’t it be awful
to be haunted by the dead and buried
What a sweet curse
to be so sure
the old sins hurt all over
Be sure
and I am
Sure and hope
from a clean bed with clean sheets
hope, hope, hope
It’s there when I sleep and there when I wake
It’s a dream and a house and a baby and one man, just this one, and me
A soft woman who was dead and buried too
Back when I was edges and glass and .45 caliber rounds
When any arms could hold me
if they would just hold on
They cross in the grave
climbing out and climbing in
a dream and a dead thing
a ghost and the woman
reaching out her hand to me
